It’s a myth that the half-dead don’t eat. While they can go without food for a long time (mugus-syrion lasted a year before his execution) their taste buds are fully functional and enjoy any foods that they delighted from their previous life.

As a side effect, they also don’t seem to mind eating…pretty much anything. During times of need they have even been known to eat the highly poisonous spawn frog “ghost maker”.
